What you’ll cover
From room heat loss to a complete system.
A knowledge and design qualification, focused on the decisions behind an efficient heating and hot-water system.
Heat loss
Room-by-room calculations, including fabric and ventilation losses.
Heat emitters
Correct radiator sizing at lower flow and return temperatures, and underfloor-heating considerations.
Pumps and pipework
Flow rates, pipe sizing, pressure loss and pump selection.
System design
Valves, components, hydraulic separation, energy storage and system configurations.
Hot water
Domestic hot-water sizing to suit the property and the people using it.
A balanced system
Expansion-vessel sizing, balancing, current standards and the regulatory framework.
Duration & assessment
Two full classroom days.
The qualification contains 16 guided-learning hours and is delivered at TomKat over two full classroom days. The course concludes with a 60-minute LCL online multiple-choice examination through XAMS. The pass mark is 75%.
There is no observed practical assessment for this standalone award.
Final attendance times are confirmed with your booking. Please expect two full days rather than a shortened refresher course.

This course does not re-award the ASHP installation and maintenance qualification or provide MCS or Competent Person Scheme membership. Check the exact evidence your employer or scheme requires; passing alone does not guarantee acceptance. No government training-grant discount is currently promised.

How long does the course take?
Two full classroom days. The qualification contains 16 guided-learning hours and finishes with the online LCL knowledge examination. Final attendance times are confirmed with your booking.
How is it assessed?
By a 60-minute LCL online multiple-choice examination through XAMS. The pass mark is 75%.
Is there a practical assessment?
No. This standalone qualification is knowledge-assessed. It covers the calculations and design principles needed for low-temperature heating and hot-water systems.
What does the price include?
The £495 price includes VAT, two days of classroom training, LCL learning materials used during the course, the online assessment, registration and LCL certification following a successful result.
Is the course automatically funded by the Heat Training Grant?
No grant discount is currently included in TomKat’s advertised price. If a funded option becomes available, its eligibility and terms will be shown separately.
