TomKat Managed Learning Programme
Start Your Gas Engineer Journey
Before you spend thousands of pounds on training, we want you to understand exactly how the Managed Learning Programme works.
This page isn’t designed to pressure you into booking a course. Its purpose is simply to help you understand how the Managed Learning Programme works so you can decide whether it’s the right route for you.
Step 1
Let’s look at your starting point
Answer four quick questions, one at a time. This is guidance rather than a formal eligibility assessment.
What best describes your background?
Can you attend weekday classroom training in Monday–Friday blocks?
Are you prepared to build a portfolio alongside classroom training?
Are you looking for a recognised route into the gas industry?
Based on your answers, the Managed Learning Programme looks like it could be a suitable route to explore.
The next steps explain the cost, timescale, portfolio and support so you can make an informed decision.
Step 2
Here’s exactly what you’ll pay
You should know exactly what you’re getting before you spend any money.
One clear course price
Including VAT
Flexible interest free payment plans are available
We can explain the available payment arrangements and when each payment would be due before you make a decision.
Step 3
What does the journey look like?
Becoming a gas engineer is a journey rather than a short course with an instant finish date. Your portfolio progress and individual circumstances will affect the overall timescale.
Step 4
The portfolio, explained honestly
This is one of the most important parts of the programme to understand before enrolling.
Who provides the portfolio engineer?
One of the first questions people ask is who provides the portfolio engineer.
It’s an important question, so we’d rather answer it clearly before you enrol.
TomKat does not promise to provide a portfolio engineer because we do not believe in making promises we cannot guarantee.
What we do provide is clear guidance, structured training, honest advice and support throughout the process so you understand what is expected at each stage.
Why this matters
The portfolio is an important part of becoming ready for ACS. It should be understood properly before you commit to the course.
Our promise
We’ll never promise something we cannot guarantee. Instead, we’ll always explain the process honestly, answer your questions openly and help you understand exactly what lies ahead.
Step 5
Meet Derek and Grace
Real people supporting you throughout the TomKat learner journey.
Practical training and approachable support
Derek leads the practical and theory training throughout the Managed Learning Programme.
Grace supports the learner journey and helps keep the process organised, approachable and easy to follow.
Together, they represent what TomKat is built around: practical training, clear guidance and honest support from the start.
Step 6
How your training fits around your life
Most learners attend one classroom week at a time, with time between visits to complete portfolio work and gain practical experience. Exact content, sequencing and dates may vary where needed.
Getting started
You’ll understand the programme, the portfolio and what is expected from the start.
Gas safety foundations
You’ll build the core knowledge and safety habits needed before moving further.
Appliance work
You’ll start applying classroom knowledge to practical appliance scenarios.
Pipework and testing
You’ll work through testing procedures, pipework and essential safety checks.
Fault finding and calculations
You’ll develop your approach to faults, calculations and accurate documentation.
Portfolio and ACS readiness
You’ll understand the evidence, assessment preparation and next steps needed to progress.
Final preparation
You’ll consolidate your learning and prepare for the practical next stage.
How often will I attend?
Learners normally attend one classroom week at a time, Monday to Friday from 9am to 4pm. These classroom weeks are usually spread throughout the programme, allowing time for portfolio development and practical experience between visits.
Can I continue working?
Many learners continue working while completing the programme. Classroom training is delivered in blocks, with portfolio work completed between training weeks. Whether this fits comfortably will depend on your own work and personal commitments.
What’s the quickest way to qualify?
Classroom attendance is only one part of the programme. The biggest influence on overall completion time is making consistent portfolio progress and having access to suitable on-site gas work. Completion times cannot be guaranteed.
Can I attend weekends?
The Managed Learning Programme is delivered on weekdays. If weekday attendance may be difficult, please speak to TomKat before enrolling so we can discuss the available dates and whether the programme is practical for your circumstances.

Common questions
Open any question for a clear answer.
How much does the course cost?
How are the classroom weeks scheduled?
Do TomKat provide my portfolio engineer?

Can I do this if I’m changing career?
What happens after the course?
When do I pay?
What happens if I’m not sure this is right for me?
